Step 3 of 3

Prepare for the hospice call.

Ask the questions in your own words. Record exactly what the representative says, and mark anything that needs follow-up.

01Availability and response

Confirm the address—not just the office ZIP code.

Ask separately about phone response and an in-person visit.

Continuity and caseload can affect how well the team knows the patient.

02Symptoms and crisis care

Listen for a specific escalation process, not only “call us anytime.”

Ask who decides, where the patient would go, and who arranges transportation.

03Services, support, and costs

Ask what is routine and what changes when needs increase.

Ask about the hospital bed, oxygen, comfort medications, and delivery timing.

Ask to receive coverage decisions and exclusions in writing.

Who did you speak with?

A simple way to begin

Hello, I’m helping a family member find hospice care. We’re comparing a few providers, and I’d like to take notes so our family can make an informed decision.

Then ask whether they serve the exact address and how soon an assessment could happen.
